I'm proud to have Manchester United on my CV but my best football days were with Aston Villa

Paul McGrath was put in a seemingly difficult position when asked on Twitter if his heart lay with Aston Villa or Manchester United.

But the 64-year-old former centre-back, who represented both with great distinction, gave a pretty straight answer, with Villa coming out on top.

McGrath lifted the FA Cup with the Red Devils in 1985 and made over 200 appearances for United before joining Villa in August 1989.

The Irishman, capped 83 times by his country, went on to play over 300 matches for the claret and blues and was a member of the team that won the League Cup in 1994 and 1996.

Affectionately referred to as 'God' by many Villa fans, McGrath left Villa shortly after the League Cup triumph in 1996.

He spent a season with Derby County before finishing off his career at Sheffield United.
