Poet and activist Amanda Gorman has said she hopes to become US President.

The 23-year-old, who became a worldwide star when she read a poem at Joe Biden's inauguration, shared her ambitions to run the country during a virtual chat on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday,.

Gorman said she had dreamed of running for president for years, adding: "This was a dream that I think came into existence around 6th grade."

She said she got the idea after one of her maths teachers jokingly suggested she run for president because she was a "very passionate, feisty girl."

"You know what? That tracks," she said to laughter from the host. "Let's put that on the bulletin board for the future."

Gormon, who became the youngest inaugural poet in American history after reciting her poem The Hill We Climb, added that her family members were also supportive of the idea, especially her sister.

Her twin, Gabrielle, was serious enough about her ambitions that she was cautious about being included in photos at college parties.

“She'd say, 'Don't get a photo of me. My sister is running for president 25 years from now. I can't have an image coming up then’,” she said.

“So we really all hold ourselves accountable to the dream."

DeGeneres responded saying, “We're 100 percent behind you”. One of her assistants then brought out fake campaign memorabilia, including 'Amanda Gorman for President' t-shirts.
