India Have Made Good Comeback: Inzamam-ul-Haq Feels Virat Kohli And Co Can Do Something Similar Like The Historic 2001 Kolkata Test
Former Pakistan cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq feels that the Indian team can execute a performance like the historic 2001 Kolkata Test in the ongoing 3rd Test encounter against England. During India vs Australia Test match in 2001 under then skipper Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman (281) and Rahul Dravid (180) slammed incredible knocks as India followed on their 1st innings score. With their batting, India managed to turn their follow-on lead into a match-winning total and later won the match by 171 runs making an impeccable comeback.
In the ongoing 3rd Test against England, India were bowled out for just 78 in the 1st innings. In response, England posted 432-10 to earn a mammoth lead of 354 runs over visitors. However, India batted amazingly on Day 3. Playing almost for the entire day, India lost only 2 wickets and did not allow England bowlers to taste success like that of the 1st innings.
India Can Do Something Like The 2001 Kolkata Test: Inzamam-ul-Haq
While speaking about India vs England 3rd Test on his YouTube channel, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq said that the Indian team can imitate the heroics of the 2001 Kolkata Test.
“I remember the India vs Australia Test, where Laxman had scored 281 and Dravid scored 180, India can do something similar now. The way they are playing, they lost only two wickets in the entire day, this is a huge deal under such pressure,” Inzamam-ul-Haq said.
The 51-year-old also felt that Rohit Sharma should have stayed longer on the crease.
“India have made a good comeback. India’s batting unit is experienced, and they showed their experience as well. Rohit Sharma, who was set at 59, should have stayed longer according to me. He had the ability, the pitch was in favour and he had moved past the initial tough stage,” Inzamam-ul-Haq further said.
Having a lead of 354 runs on their shoulders on Day 3, India’s Rohit Sharma scored 59 runs after his opening partner KL Rahul lost his wicket cheaply for 8 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara remained unbeaten on 91 while managing an 82-run partnership with Sharma. Later, Pujara and Virat Kohli (45*) also accounted for an unbeaten 99-run stand to take India’s scoreboard to 215-2 at the stumps of Day 3.
While trailing by 139 runs, India will resume batting on Day 4 with hopes of putting a mammoth total on the scoreboard. Currently, India leads the series 1-0 after winning the previous Lord’s Test. The 1st Test between both the teams in Nottingham ended in a draw.
