Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer said that the next two Test matches against England will be very vital for India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.

Rahane, who is India’s vice-captain in Test format, hasn’t scored enough runs with the only time he stepped up was in Lord’s where his 61 helped India revive their innings. The Mumbai batsman averages 19.00 from the three matches he has played in the series so far.

Ajinkya Rahane has been a disappointment: Wasim Jaffer

Rahane’s most of the dismissals have come by nicking the ball behind the stumps and Jaffer feels that Rahane, in his early years of cricket, was India’s consistent batsman in away conditions. Jaffer wants the Mumbai player to blaze runs in the upcoming matches.

“Ajinkya Rahane has been a disappointment. You know, he’s been getting out through soft dismissals, mostly caught behind. A player of his quality shouldn’t do that because the batting lineup depends a lot on him,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

“He needs to fire if he gets another Test. On away tours, he’s been a very consistent player, he’s put up huge scores in Australia, England and South Africa. He needs to fire because the next two Tests are very, very vital,” he added.

Rohit Sharma really batted well: Wasim Jaffer

Indian opener Rohit Sharma leapfrogged skipper Virat Kohli in ICC Test Batsmen rankings as he attained his career’s best Test ranking after scoring 19 and 59 against England at Headingley. With this Rohit is currently ranked as the top-most Indian batsman in Test cricket.

Rohit is looking for his first overseas Test hundred after having notched up seven on home soil. In the second Test at Lord’s, he was bowled by James Anderson on 83, and in the next match, he was trapped before the wicket while changing his approach to defensive mode.

Jaffer credited Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara for their batting in the second innings of the third Test.

“Rohit batted really well. He looked set to score a hundred but unfortunately, he got out due to the umpire’s call. Pujara batted magnificently. He got out on 91 on the morning of the 4th day but he batted really well till then. He looked in a very positive mindset,” Jaffer said.

The fourth Test will be played at Kennington Oval in London, beginning on September 2.
