Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels that the Indian players were afraid of missing the IPL matches if they had contracted with the covid-19 and hence refused to take the field at Old Trafford for the fifth Test, which was then cancelled on the morning of the match.

All the players participating in the IPL 2021 will soon fly to the UAE where the tournament, which was suspended in May due to the covid-19 outbreak will resume from September 19.

Michael Vaughan reckons the cancellation of the Manchester Test forced by the Indian players is all due to the big bucks paid to them in the IPL.

“Let’s be honest, this is all about money and the IPL. The Test has been cancelled because players were petrified of catching covid and missing the IPL,” Michael Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

India’s assistant physio Yogesh Parmar had returned a positive Covid-19 test on Wednesday. The Indian players have been worried since Parmar, being the physio, had been in close contact with them, and hence after they had expressed their apprehensions to the BCCI, the board, in a joint decision with the ECB, decided to call off the game.

It is completely disrespectful towards the paying public: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan asserted that the players should have trusted the RT_pCR results which had came negative on Thursday.

“In a week or so we will be watching the IPL and the players will be running around smiling and happy. But they should have trusted the PCR tests. We know a lot about this virus now. We know how to manage and handle it better. Players are double vaccinated and biosecurity can be raised very quickly,” he added.

The 46-year-old-commentator maintained that India’s decision to pull out hours before the game was disrespectful to the thousands of people who had come to watch the game at Old Trafford.

“The game of cricket needed this Test match. The series was brilliantly poised. It just does not sit comfortably that a Test match can be cancelled 90 minutes before the toss. It is completely disrespectful towards the paying public,” the former skipper further wrote.

The BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. The series, for now, stands at 2-1 as both the boards and the ICC continue their talks regarding the fate of the fifth Test
