While the 71st century continues to elude him, India captain Virat Kohli has built down such a remarkable career over the last decade, that he breaks and creates records almost every other innings, even in this indifferent form.

On Sunday, Virat Kohli scored his 1000th Test run on England soil, while batting in India’s second innings of the Oval Test during the first session on Day 4. He is only the fourth Indian batsman to do so – after legendary batters Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid – although his average of 34 is much less than the other three.

Virat Kohli also has over 1000 Test runs in Australia. This makes him only the third Indian – after Tendulkar and Dravid – to have recorded more than 1000 runs in both England and Australia.

Tendulkar had aggregated 1809 runs in Australia and 1575 runs in England while Dravid ticked 1143 runs Down Under and 1376 in the Old Blight. Virat Kohli, who is the first Asian skipper to win a Test series in Australia, has amassed 1352 runs so far in Australia at 54.08 and 1002 runs in England.

He crossed that landmark with a boundary, moving to 44. However, he was dismissed on that score by Moeen Ali, ending another innings of a start not being converted to a three-figure score.

Barring Ajinkya Rahane, who got out for a duck, all other of the top 8 Indian batsmen had a start to their innings in the second innings, as India’s lead grew further. On Day 4, despite wickets falling, the team managed to consolidate on the platform set up by Rohit Sharma’s century and Cheteshwar Pujara’s fifty.

Some disciplined, yet attacking at times, batting by Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur have taken the lead over 270. With the surface still fairly batting friendly, India would want to declare with no less than a 350-run lead.
