The Indian National Cricket Team would be pretty satisfied with the way they have performed in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. India recently registered a 157-run win in the fourth Test to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
With one game left to play, India have a real chance to claim a historic series win in England. England, on the other hand, would be hopeful of a win in the last game and thereby level the series.
India opted for Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav for the fourth Test in place of M Shami and Ishant Sharma. Rohit Sharma (11 off 27) and KL Rahul (17 off 44) didn’t make a great start to the innings after India were put in to bat first. Cheteshwar Pujara (4 off 31) too couldn’t last long, while Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion in the batting order didn’t help either.
Virat Kohli, however, stood firm and scored a half-century off 95 balls. Shardul Thakur’s 57-run knock later in the innings helped India post 191 in the first innings. Chris Woakes was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4 for 55, while Robinson made three scalps.
England didn’t start too well either, thanks to a brilliant over from Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian speedster got rid of both Joe Burns and Haseeb Hameed in his second over of the innings. Umesh Yadav then removed Malan, Overton, and Joe Root to help India turn the game their way.
However, substantial contributions from Ollie Pope (81 of 159), Bairstow (37 off 77), and Chris Woakes (50 off 60) helped England take a first-innings lead of 99 runs. England were bowled out for 290 runs in their first innings.
India needed someone who could play a big innings to get back into the game and Rohit Sharma ensured he took on the responsibility. The Hitman played some gorgeous shots en-route to his first-ever overseas century. It was an innings that came when it mattered the most.
The Indian openers scored 127 runs off 256 balls. His knock set the foundation for a huge total on the board. The other batsmen too played crucial knocks as India went on to score 466 runs in their second innings, giving England a target of 368 runs.
England openers gave a rock-solid start, stitching a 100-run partnership between them. Burns scored a half-century off 125 balls, while Haseeb Hameed scored 63 off 193 balls. However, once the openers departed, England found themselves all at sea. Jasprit Bumrah took the wickets of Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow to trigger a collapse and England were eventually bowled out for 210 runs.
India will play the fifth Test against England at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, starting 10th September 2021.
