India vs England, 5th Test: Head to Head Records

The fifth and the final Test of the five-match Test series between India and England will be played at Emirates Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester, starting 10^th September 2021. After winning the fourth Test at Kennington Oval, India have taken a 2-1 lead in the series. They would be keen to win the next Test and thereby claim the series.

England, on the other hand, would be disappointed with their batting performances throughout the series. Given the way things have panned out for them, it’s unlikely if England could make a comeback in the next game and deny India of a series win.

The visitors won the fourth Test by a margin of 157 runs. After being put in to bat first, India didn’t make a great start. The top three fell inside 40 runs. Virat Kohli, however, held firm and scored a half-century. Besides, a valuable half-century from Shardul Thakur (57 off 36) helped India score 191 in the first innings. Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav, however, led the visitors’ fightback in the second innings.

Bumrah sent both the openers packing in his second over of the innings. Umesh then accounted for the next three wickets including the prized wicket of Joe Root to leave England reeling at 62 for 5. Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow, however, led England’s recovery and stitched a valuable 89-run stand to get England out of trouble. Ollie Pope went onto score 81 runs off 159 balls, while Bairstow amassed 37 off 77 balls.

Valuable contributions from Moeen Ali (35 off 71) and Chris Woakes (50 off 60) helped England finish their innings at 290 in the second innings, thereby taking a first-innings lead of 99 runs.

England had an upper hand at the game and the bowlers looked to pick an early wicket in the second innings to take full control of the game. However, the visiting openers had other plans. The in-form batsmen, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave the visitors a fine-start in India’s second innings, stitching an 83-run opening partnership.

Rohit Sharma went onto score his first overseas century in Test Cricket. He played a heart-warming 1127-run knock off 256 balls, including 14 fours and 1 six. Cheteshwar Pujara (61 off 127) and Virat Kohli (44 off 96) further added to the total. India, in the end, finished their innings on 466 runs.

England openers batted well to see off the final session of day 4. Shardul Thakur gave India the first breakthrough in the form of Joe Burns (50 off 125). England were well placed at 131 for 2 at Lunch on Day 5. However, a brilliant spell from Jasprit Bumrah on a wicket that had a little help saw India roar back into the contest.

Bumrah sent back Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope with two beauties to trigger England’s collapse. Ravindra Jadeja supported with 2 more wickets, while Umesh Yadav removed the tail. England, as a result, were bowled out for just 210 runs.
