If India Wins The First Day Of The Oval Test, They Will Come Back Into The Series: Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan strongly believes that Virat Kohli-led Indian side can come back into the Test series despite losing at Headingley.

On Saturday, India lost to England by an innings and 76 runs after they were bowled out for 278 in the first session itself. Despite showing a promising comeback on Day 3, India’s set batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli were dismissed by Ollie Robinson and thereafter the visitors skittled down with the lower-middle order and tailenders soon followed the senior batters to the dugout.

If they win the first day, they’ll be fine, they’ll come back into the series and I am sure will gain that confidence: Michael Vaughan

England levelled the five-match series 1-1 after they suffered a shocking defeat at Lord’s and Vaughan feels that India can make a comeback at Kennington Oval, the venue for the next Test match, if they manage to dominate the first day.

“I’ll say that from what I have seen from India this week, it concerns me that my prediction could be wrong. But I do think we have two teams like Jekyll and Hyde (From the famous novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde),” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

“You’re not really sure what’s going to arrive at The Oval… That first day is going to be hugely important for the Indian side. If they win the first day, they’ll be fine, they’ll come back into the series and I am sure will gain that confidence. But again, if they lose that first day at The Oval, Headingley’s memories might come flipping back,” he added.

Virat Kohli has got a lot of work to do over the next few days: Michael Vaughan

This Indian team carries a lot of expectations and hopes to win a Test series in England after a span of 14 years, which will not only make them the best Indian Test side but also add lots of confidence amongst the team members, especially after losing the World Test Championship final to New Zealand.

Vaughan feels Virat Kohli and the team management needs to chalk their plans for selecting their team for the Oval Test and needs to be mentally in a good state.

“I still think India have a better Test team but this England side at home, they’ll take some beatings. Only New Zealand have beaten a Joe Root side in English conditions. So, Virat has got a lot of work to do over the next few days to get his team, first and foremost mentally right but also selection. They have to get the team selected correctly for the conditions they’ll find in London,” Vaughan mentioned.

The fourth Test between India and England will start on September 2 in London.
