Inigo Calderon has reiterated that Bristol Rovers will only sign players this month if they will improve his squad as the midway point in the January transfer window nears.

The Gas have already made one signing this month, bringing in experienced midfielder Romaine Sawyers on a free transfer after the 33-year-old's one-month contract at AFC Wimbledon expired. Additionally, they have extended teenagers Kofi Shaw and Dan Ellison's respective loans at National League sides Yeovil Town and Aldershot Town for the remainder of the campaign.

Having been announced on Wednesday, Sawyers was thrown straight into the starting line up for Rovers' 3-0 defeat at Premier League side Ipswich Town in the FA Cup third round on Sunday and offered glimpses of what he could bring to the Gas' ranks.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol after the loss at Portman Road, Calderon said: "This market is not the easiest one because there are no bargains so it's a risky one. Obviously the club is looking for options. It will have to be something that improves the group otherwise I'm happy with what we have.

"If something comes in that is better for the group, happy days, otherwise we stick with the plan."

While there will naturally be more focus on who Rovers might bring in, it's also possible that there will also be departures with the Spaniard suggesting previously that he has inherited an inflated squad.

It's not currently clear who could be subject to a departure, be that on loan or permanently, but when asked about outgoings, Calderon added: "The same. If they go then someone has to be coming otherwise I'm happy with the ones we have."
