Inside No.9 creators Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith played a same-sex couple in the finale for the eighth series of the show.

The finale, which was called ‘The Last Weekend’, aired last night (May 25), and depicted the relationship of Joe (Pemberton) and Chas (Shearsmith). After nine years together, in which they are “truly in love”, the pair were faced with the unenviable task of saying goodbye to each other.

The episode received praise from audiences, with one Twitter user writing: "I need to say this too often, but we don’t deserve @ReeceShearsmith and @SP1nightonly. Goliaths of their craft. Long may they reign #InsideNo9”

“The end of #InsideNo9 should be heralded with BAFTAs, documentaries, special feature Blu-rays, an updated Insider’s Guide……This is the beginning….” wrote another user, while Pemberton thanked viewers for the reception to the latest series.

With the latest series now concluding, plans will be underway for more creative stories, and the duo recently revealed that they almost managed to sign up Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire for one episode.

“We talked to Sarah about one role, but she's so busy, and this was way back towards the start of Happy Valley,” revealed Pemberton. “There was a role she was interested in, but she couldn't do it and now she spends a lot of time in America."

“She's a brilliant, brilliant actress and she can do the comedy and the drama, so if we could get her we would have her like a shot”, he added, before addressing the possibility of casting The Pillowman co-star Lily Allen.

“If the part is right – we don't put actors first, we put characters first – absolutely, I think she'd be a great person to have involved,” he said. “But she might hate me after doing three months on stage, you never know.”

Inside No. 9 airs on BBC Two.
