Romelu Lukaku scored a hat-trick as Belgium survived a scare to beat Luxembourg 5-1 in Genk.

The Red Devils made an explosive start with Lukaku collecting Marrouane Fellani’s through ball and rounding the keeper before slotting the ball home.

But Luxembourg hit back in spectacular fashion when Aurelier Joachim lashed in a low shot from 25 yards that arrowed into the bottom corner.

Belgium restored their lead when a mis-hit clearance fell to Lukaku whose volley was too hot to handle.

The Chelsea striker came close to sealing a hat-trick when his chip went inches wide before his snap-shot was brilliantly parried by the keeper.

Lukaku did get his treble after the break after beating two players and slotting the ball in.

Adnan Januzaj thrilled the crowd with some trickery on his international debut after coming on before Spurs midfielder Nacer Chadli made it four with a low finish.

Kevin De Bruyne added a fifth with a late penalty after Divock Origi was fouled in the area.

18’ – FELLAINI CHANCE! De Bruyne and Hazard combine to set up Lukaku whose cannot get on the end of the cross. It results in a corner and De Bruyne's delivery is headed inches over by Fellaini.

22’ – GOAL! Belgium 2-1 Luxembourg. Lukaku scores again with a volley that the keeper cannot keep out after a mix up by two defenders.

34’ – CHANCE! Fellaini goes close with a half volley after Alderweireld's cross falls to him on the edge of the box, that was inches away from making it 3-0

36’ – LUKAKU CHANCE! Lukaku chips the ball over the keeper but his effort goes narrowly wide, so close to sealing his hat-trick.

41’ – STUNNING SAVE! Lukaku's snap shot from six yards out is brilliantly kept out by Moris.

50’ – JANUZAJ SKILL! Lukaku wins a corner off Philipps. Januzaj with some trickery and his cross finds Fellaini who heads over.

53’ – GOAL! Belgium 3-1 Luxembourg. Lukaku gets his first hat-trick for Belgium by twisting past two players before slotting the ball in.

57’ – DIVING HEADER! Jans' cross finds Mutsch's whose diving header goes narrowly wide.

71’ - GOAL! Belgium 4-1 Luxembourg. Chadli makes it four with a slick low finish after cutting inside and beating the keeper at his near post.

86’ – FELLIANI VOLLEY! Fellaini blazes over from close range with a volley after chesting the ball.

89’ – GOAL (PEN)! Belgium 5-1 Luxembourg. Spot-kick awarded to Belgium after Origi goes down. De Bruyne steps up and calmly side-foots the ball into the right-hand corner.


It is the first time Belgium have scored more than two goals in a friendly in eight games.

Adnan Januzaj becomes the 100th Manchester United youth player to represent his country at international level.

Luxembourg’s last away win was in September 2008 against Switzerland.



Romelu Lukaku (Belgium): The striker played the role of target man brilliantly with three well-taken goals. He was a constant threat and could have had two hat-tricks. The pick of his goals was the third where he twisted past two players and finished low past the keeper, another sign of his sky high confidence.
