International HOT or NOT: 442, Wilshere, Dier, Noble

What sexy, and what isn’t, in the England team this week…

HOT

4-4-2
Hello, old friend. After years of modernising and hipsterising and sexing up England’s approach to football, the bog standard dinosaur formation is suddenly staring Roy Hodgson in the face like a Stegosaurus on his doorstep. Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy showed in the 2-1 win against Turkey what the Premier League scoring stats already prove - that they are the two living Englishmen Europeans fear most. But it was simultaneously obvious that the widely favoured 4-3-3 will only suit one of them (Kane), while leaving Vardy nullified on the wing. Hodgson has long eulogised the tactical flexibility of his squad; now could be the time to put that to the test by switching to a strategy that best fits his personnel.

Eric Dier
Should England just start sending all its budding footballers to Europe for their formative years? Another assured display in defensive midfield from the Portugal-schooled Tottenham man cemented his status as a virtually guaranteed starter in France - not too shabby for a player who began the season as a reserve defender at his club. A potential fly in the ointment is that Hodgson’s decision to pick just three centre-backs for the Euros - none of whom are looking particularly sharp - means Dier will also be a reserve defender in France. It’s a shame there aren’t two Eric Diers, because to play him in defence now would seem a backwards step in more ways then one.

Jack Wilshere
The Arsenal midfielder was by no means spectacular against Turkey, but he did not break any limbs or rupture any ligaments - and that alone ensures he will be on the plane to France. Hodgson’s perceived favouritism towards the perennially injured 24-year-old threatens to turn some fans against the player, but there’s no doubt he offers something more elegant than the manager’s other midfield options. Yet while that touch of class has helped Wilshere see off the likes of Danny Drinkwater and Mark Noble, there could be an unexpected pretender to his throne in the shape of reinvented midfield general Wayne Rooney.

NOT

Defending
England’s combination of fluency in attack and vulnerability at the back is actually quite refreshing, with the opposite having historically been true with fairly turgid results, but the novelty will quickly wear off if Hodgson’s side start leaking goals at crucial times in France. Against Turkey, England’s back four looked a flimsier unit that anything Hodgson ever cobbled together in his days at Fulham or West Brom. A lack of top defensive talent has been cited, but of greater concern is a lack of defensive leadership. What Hodgson needs is a Brede Hangeland. Just younger, and more English, and better.

Wingers
It would have solved a lot of tactical headaches if Vardy had flourished in a wide role at the Etihad, but if international football history has repeatedly taught us one thing it is that shoving square pegs into round holes never works. With the once-lauded Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain no longer in contention, Raheem Sterling has emerged as Hodgson’s leading winger - and that probably isn’t even his best position either (anyone remember him playing a blinder behind the striker against Italy at Brazil 2014?). All of which leaves us with Andros Townsend - not good enough for Spurs, relegated with Newcastle but somehow ending the season as his country’s premiere wing wizard.

Mark Noble
The clamour for the West Ham midfielder’s inclusion will grow louder with every step Hodgson puts wrong between now and the end of the Euros. But in truth, the fact that an uncapped 29-year-old West Ham player was the most controversial omission from England’s 26-man squad only goes to highlight the lack of real depth at the manager’s disposal. If Noble is any better than Wilshere, Drinkwater, James Milner or Jordan Henderson, there’s not much in it. Although as Kane’s spot-kick miss against Turkey reminded us, Noble is one of the few Englishman you’d trust to take a penalty.
