Chennai Super Kings pacer Josh Hazlewood will travel to the UAE for the second half of the IPL 2021, the franchise confirmed on Saturday.

The lanky seamer had pulled out of the tournament before it had started in April citing “personal reasons”. CSK then replaced him with his compatriot Jason Behrendorff.

Now though, Josh Hazlewood, who is also in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad, has made himself available for the remainder of the IPL which will be played in the UAE, the same venue for the World Cup. This would mean that CSK would have to release Behrendorff from their squad, according to the tournament’s replacement rule.

“Hazlewood has confirmed his availability for the second phase of IPL starting from September 19. The BCCI has confirmed that players who were not available in the first phase can join the respective teams in the second phase if they are fit and available. Considering Hazlewood’s form, he will be a great addition to our team,” said CSK CEO KS Viswanathan in a statement released by the franchise.

Josh Hazlewood made his return to Australia’s T20 setup for their tours to the West Indies and Bangladesh. He picked 12 wickets in 8 games on those two tours at a superb economy of 6.55.

He made his IPL debut last season in the UAE for MS Dhoni’s side. He featured in 3 matches and could manage just a solitary wicket, but again bowled parsimoniously – leaking at just 6.40 runs an over.

CSK players including MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina start training in Dubai after completing quarantine

The CSK contingent, including captain MS Dhoni, have started their training at the ICC Academy in Dubai. They arrived in Dubai on August 13 and headed straight into quarantine in their hotel at The Palm.

After completing their 6-day quarantine, the players held their first training session on Thursday. Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, Karn Sharma and Deepak Chahar joined the skipper with some football practice as well.

After a disappointing season last year – CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time – the Yellow Army roared back with 5 wins in 7 matches this year before the tournament was suspended and are placed second on the points table. They will resume the tournament against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Dubai on September 19.
