Steve Smith feels Delhi Capitals can even perform better than they did in the first half of the IPL 2021, where they won 6 matches out of 8 and are sitting at the top of the points table going into the second half of the season, to be played in the UAE from September 19.

Steve Smith, who has joined the Capitals camp in Dubai, said the team would be needed to play their best cricket towards the end of the tournament as both Delhi and Smith himself eyes their maiden IPL title.

The Capitals reached their maiden final last season but failed to cross the final hurdle: the rampant Mumbai Indians. However, this season they looked like the most dominant team in the first half.

“We have to pick up from where we left off. We were playing some really good cricket, getting the results we were after. And I think we can do even better so we should be playing our best cricket in the back end of the tournament,” Steve Smith said.

“You have to play well enough to get to the final, but hopefully, we can play our best cricket in the final.

“Delhi are sitting at a great spot on the table so hope that we can keep playing some great cricket and be there at the business end of the tournament,”

Steve Smith had a middling season with the bat – he scored 104 runs in 5 innings at a strike rate of 111.83.

Iyer quality player and good to see him back out in the park: Steve Smith

While Steve Smith would want to improve on his batting numbers, he may not start in the eleven as Shreyas Iyer is back after recovering from an injured shoulder due to which he missed the first half of the season.

“It’s been a few months since we have played together so we have to build again. We have a great squad and we have Shreyas Iyer back in the side as well, which adds a lot more to us. He’s a quality player and good to see him back out in the park,” the Aussie said.

It remains to be seen whether Iyer is given back the captaincy or the franchise decides to continue with Rishabh Pant at the helm. The Capitals take on bottom-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 22 in Dubai.
