Ireland captain Caelan Doris on four-man shortlist for world player of the year
Caelan Doris, the captain of Ireland's rugby team, is among the four nominees for World Rugby men’s player of the year. The 26 year old number eight was instrumental in leading Ireland to a Test victory over world champions South Africa this summer and played a key role in Ireland’s Six Nations title-winning team last season.
If successful, Doris would be the fourth Irishman to win the award, following Keith Wood, Johnny Sexton and Josh van der Flier. He faces competition from three Springboks – former winner Pieter-Steph du Toit, lock Eben Etzebeth and wing Cheslin Kolbe.
England wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is also nominated for men’s breakthrough player of the year, alongside Ireland centre Jamie Osborne, South Africa back Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and New Zealand flanker Wallace Sititi. England’s Ellie Kildunne and Alex Matthews are contenders for women’s player of the year, with Red Roses flanker Maddie Feaunati and Ireland’s Erin King nominated in the breakthrough category.
