'I've spotted a worrying Liverpool trend that Arne Slot needs to fix quickly'
Liverpool returns to Premier League action this weekend with Fulham coming to Anfield. Ahead of the game, we spoke to Nick Sapia from the LFC Supporter's Club in Boston.
Liverpool won again midweek but Arne Slot wasn't pleased with the performance. What did you make of it?
They definitely got away with one, and Arne Slot is right to critique the performance. For me, it's another data point in a slightly worrying trend — away from home, the Reds have been too open. They've given up greater than 1.2 xG in each of the last three matches away from home in all competitions (Girona, Newcastle, and Southampton). It's good they've managed to get results from these games, but it isn't sustainable — they'll get burned eventually.

This is when it gets really tough — games are stacking up with few opportunities for rest. Injuries are starting to hit the squad. I'm sure it has to be the most mentally challenging part of the season for the players, and I think Arne is trying to refocus them.
In the Premier League, the Reds have a commanding lead at the top. Are you allowing yourself to get excited yet?
Absolutely. The race is wide open, and the Reds are in it! Right now, I'm just trying to enjoy the journey. This team is entertaining; I'm enjoying watching Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk turning back time every week; I'm enjoying watching the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch; I'm enjoying listening to Arne Slot talk about his approach and the squad.
The team seems to really enjoy the moment, and I'm trying to do the same. Regardless of whether or not they lift any major trophy (trophies?) at the end of the season, it will be a heck of a ride.
Fulham comes to Anfield this weekend. What changes to the team would you make, and are you expecting Liverpool to win?
Yes, they should win. While all four goals in last year's thrilling 4-3 win over Fulham at Anfield were truly spectacular, I could do with something less stressful this time! I'd like to see something similar to the starting lineup from the Manchester City match, with Alisson back in goal, Curtis Jones in for Alexis Mac Allister, and a front three of Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo.
The January transfer window is nearing. What do you want to see happen from a Reds perspective?
I honestly just want Liverpool to get the contract situations sorted out in January — that's it. I think this team has everything it needs to win trophies this season, and there should be a boost in January with the returns of Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley, and Kostas Tsimikas from injury.
There's been some positive movement on the contract front with Salah and Van Dijk, so bringing in their successors in January doesn't seem as urgent as it has in the past. Things could still go sideways, but I'm feeling more bullish about those deals getting done. I could be convinced to bring in another body in midfield, but I really don't think it's necessary. This team already has everything it needs.
