Report: Jaguars expected to promote Trent Baalke as next general manager

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to promote Trent Baalke to become their next general manager.

The Jaguars, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, are expected to close the deal and make Baalke’s hiring official in the near future.

Baalke was hired in February as the the Jaguars’ director of pro personnel under then-general manager Dave Caldwell.

Caldwell was fired in November after eight seasons with the team. That prompted team owner Shahid Kahn to tab Baalke to take his place as their interim GM.

Now, it seems, the move will be permanent.

Baalke, 56, had served as the general manager for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2016 and helped lead them to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season. He was fired after the 2016 season, and didn’t hold a job in the sport until landing in Jacksonville last year.

Baalke takes over in Jacksonville with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, who was hired as the Jaguars’ next head coach last week. Meyer, who won three national titles at the collegiate level, had been working as a Fox Sports analyst.

The two are tasked with turning the franchise around. The Jaguars finished the season 1-15, and will have the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft — which they will presumably use on Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. For a team that has reached the playoffs and posted a winning record just once since 2007, Meyer and Baalke have a tough task ahead of them.
