Jacobs reveals Chelsea midfielder ‘one to watch’ as Liverpool plan to build around Bellingham
Liverpool reportedly have ‘genuine interest’ in Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount ahead of what promises to be a hectic summer transfer window.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will try to rebuild his whole midfield at the end of the season.
Jude Bellingham is the club’s number-one target, but will cost at least £130million should he leave Borussia Dortmund.
The Premier League club are being linked with several midfield players, including West Ham’s Declan Rice and Wolves’ Matheus Nunes.
Klopp was reportedly keen on signing Nunes before he moved to Molineux last summer.
It would be very surprising if Liverpool do not sign at least two new midfielders in the 2023 summer transfer window. However, will Fenway Sports Group back Klopp?
They will, according to Ben Jacobs, who says the Reds’ owners are ‘ready to fund’ a huge overhaul.
Jacobs wrote for CaughtOffside: ‘FSG are prepared to back Klopp. Their commitment to the club remains as strong as ever with John Henry confirming he’s looking for investment but not an outright sale.
‘Liverpool always plan ahead, and look to get their business done early. As a result, a busy summer window doesn’t necessarily mean a frantic one.’
The CBS Sports journalist then confirmed that revamping their midfield is Liverpool’s top priority.
The Reds have put in lots of ‘legwork’ into signing Bellingham and are aware of fierce competition from Manchester City and Real Madrid.
As everyone is fully aware, Klopp’s side have been fairly rubbish this season and Champions League qualification looks pretty unlikely at this moment in time.
However, Bellingham is keen to join the right project and the Reds not qualifying for Europe’s premier competition is not expected to put him off.
The 19-year-old’s decision will not come down to Champions League football or money, but the right ‘project, manager and dressing room’.
Jacobs confirms that Bellingham would not be the club’s only midfield acquisition, should they complete that deal.
As mentioned prior, they are keen on Nunes and his signing is ‘a real possibility’, though no pre-agreement has been reached, despite reports suggesting it has.
While they ‘continue to monitor’ the Portuguese playmaker, Liverpool have ‘genuine interest’ in Mount – who is apparently ‘one to watch’.
Mount is out of contract in 16 months, which has led to lots of doubts over his future at Stamford Bridge.
Jacobs claims that Chelsea ‘feel they have the situation in their control as they look to extend Mount’s deal’.
The 24-year-old reportedly wants a £240,000-a-week contract, however, the Blues want the player to sign an ‘incentive driven’ deal that will have a reduced wage if they fail to qualify for the Champions League in any given season.
Mount does ‘love’ Chelsea – who he has been with since the age of six – but may be ‘tempted’ to leave due to a lack of minutes in Graham Potter’s bloated squad.
The report adds that Liverpool want to sign a new central defender and are interested in RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.
