Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has reacted to being left out of the latest England squad, following his goal in the win against Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol.

Sancho struggled during his debut season at Manchester United, notching just five goals and three assists in all competitions. This was a big drop from his form in the previous year at Borussia Dortmund, where he had a hand in 36 goals.

The attacker seems to be improving under new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag though. He opened his account for the new season with a goal in United’s 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool.

Sancho also got the winner against Leicester City on September 1, which saw them register their third straight win in the Premier League.

Sancho started as United travelled to Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday night. And he put the Red Devils in front in the 17th minute.

The 22-year-old received the ball in a good position and turned away from a defender before finding the back of the net on his left foot, with the help of the post.

Sancho was joined by Cristiano Ronaldo on the scoresheet. He bagged from the penalty spot after Diogo Dalot was brought down in the box by a clumsy challenge.

Sheriff didn’t really trouble United shot-stopper David de Gea and the visitors went on to pick up all three points.

Southgate leaves Jadon Sancho out

It was a good night for Sancho after he was left out of Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany.

Southgate has instead gone with Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Ivan Toney in forward areas.

This means Sancho’s United team-mate Marcus Rashford also misses out. However, this decision is mainly because of his recovery from injury.

Following the game against Sheriff, Sancho conducted an interview with MUTV and was asked about making the England World Cup squad.

Winger talks main ‘targets’

“Yeah 100 per cent, that is one of the targets,” Sancho replied (via Manchester Evening News).

“It’s unfortunate that I didn’t get the call-up. But I have to just keep focusing on myself and keep on working hard, week in and week out. That’s what I’ll do.”

Sancho will certainly be disappointed he didn’t make the cut. There is fierce competition for places in attack though, and someone has to miss out.

As Sancho says, the only thing he can do is continue to impress in a United shirt. He has a great platform to get back into the mix and potentially start for England in Qatar.

Sancho is in a much better place than he was last season. Ten Hag is putting his trust in the former Dortmund ace, and this is paying off.

The same can also be said for Rashford. Prior to his injury, he was getting regular starts up front – ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Both players need to get among the goals once the international break ends. This will be a huge help for their World Cup aspirations.

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes suggested a simple Jadon Sancho change that could make Man Utd more potent, while Owen Hargreaves weighed in on the forward’s England snub.
