Jaguars reportedly trade Gardner Minshew to Eagles for draft pick

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly bringing in more competition for Jalen Hurts. The team took action Saturday, dealing a draft pick for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The deal is for a conditional sixth-round pick. That pick can be upgraded to a fifth-round selection depending on how much Minshew plays for the Eagles in 2021.

Minshew, 25, was on the trade block after the Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jaguars coach Urban Meyer named Lawrence the team's starter Wednesday. In 23 games, Minshew has completed 62.9 percent of his passes with 37 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

Will Gardner Minshew start over Jalen Hurts?

The acquisition comes after an offseason and training camp in which new Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has refused to name Hurts as the team's starting quarterback. That announcement seems like a given at this point. Hurts has taken every rep with the first-team in practice, and rested during the team's preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday. Coming into the contest, there were reports the Eagles would rest most of their starters against the Jets.

The Minshew trade isn't the biggest vote of confidence for Hurts, though he should get an opportunity to start at the beginning of the season. Even if Sirianni believes Minshew is the better player, he would need a few weeks to learn the Eagles' playbook. If Hurts shows improvement as a passer, and performs well to open the season, it's possible he holds off Minshew and Joe Flacco and keeps the job the entire year.

But if Hurts struggles early, the Eagles now have another solid option on the depth chart. Given how little Sirianni has backed Hurts during training camp, it may not take much for Minshew to receive meaningful snaps.
