On Thursday, legendary England pacer James Anderson surpassed Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar for the record of playing most Test matches at home as he took the field to play in the Oval Test against India.

James Anderson has now participated in 95 Tests in England; Sachin Tendulkar had featured in 94 Tests in India. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting follows the list with 92 home appearances while Alastair Cook and Steve Waugh had 89 Test caps in their respective home countries.

With 631 wickets, James Anderson is the third-highest wicket-taker – the leading pacer in the list – and only behind Muttiah Muralitharan (800), and Shane Warner (708). The 39-year-old Lancashire pacer, who has over 1000 first-class scalps to his name, is likely to call off his time next year post the Ashes down under.

India bowled out for 191; Bumrah removes openers

Meanwhile, it has been an entertaining day at the Oval so far, filled with boundaries and wickets. At the time of writing, which is at the 10-over mark in England’s innings, the hosts are 29/2 – both wickets, those of the openers, fell to Jasprit Bumrah.

This, after they had bowled India out for 191 after Joe Root won the toss and opted to bowl in helpful conditions.

Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur notched up their respective fifties, while no other batsman could cross the 20-run mark. Chris Woakes, who is playing his first Test match this year, snapped four Indian wickets while Ollie Robinson took three.

India were pinned down to 127/7 before Thakur, who missed the last two Tests after playing in the first match, launched a counter-attack against the English bowlers to bring up his fifty in 31 balls – the second-fastest Test fifty by an Indian.
