James Maddison sits out England training again as World Cup 2022 opener draws near

James Maddison again missed England training today for recovery from a knee injury sustained last weekend with Leicester.

However, the remaining 25 trained in 33-degree heat at England’s Al Wakrah training base ahead of their opening match against Iran on Monday.

England remain hopeful that Maddison, who spent the session inside with the team physios, will be available to give manager Gareth Southgate a full complement of options for the clash.

Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips have recently overcome respective groin and shoulder surgeries and are available.

It was England’s third training session and second in the midday sun, designed to help players adapt to the temperatures ahead of a 4pm local-time kick-off on Monday.

It was the hottest day yet for the squad, who have been taking on ice drinks immediately after coming off the training pitch.

They did a warm-up and passing drills before media cameras were moved away. Southgate will be keen to hide any tactical work from his rivals ahead of their Group B matches.

Conor Gallagher and Aaron Ramsdale also faced the media at the FA’s Qatari HQ.
