Jamie Carragher and Ally McCoist have disagreed on whether Liverpool will end Manchester City's title defence with a win on Sunday. Arne Slot's team will move 11 points clear of Pep Guardiola's side with victory at Anfield this weekend.

City have suffered an alarming drop off having failed to win any of their last six fixtures across all competitions. The reigning English champions have lost their last three Premier League games as part of that run, with last Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham a new nadir.

Liverpool meanwhile have been in fine form all season with a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in September their only defeat. The Reds could now deal a severe blow to City who have won a record four consecutive top flight titles.

And former Liverpool centre-back Carragher has shared his belief that victory on Sunday will deal a fatal blow to City's hopes of stretching their reign as Premier League champions.

"With some hesitation, I will make a prediction which - because of the Guardiola factor - may come back to haunt me," he wrote in his Telegraph column. "If City lose to Liverpool, their title defence is over before Christmas.

"An 11-point gap would be too much. That is not necessarily because Liverpool would stretch away to win the Premier League. Arsenal and Chelsea have a real chance this season, too.

"But City would need to go into the Christmas schedule looking capable of going on one of their prolonged winning sequences. No one analysing their performances could presume they will not lose more of the 25 games remaining after the Anfield trip. On current form, City could lose another five or six.

"That makes the upcoming game monumental in this year’s title race, early as it is. Slot will recognise this, too. The difference between an 11-point and five point lead is massive psychologically."

But former Rangers player McCoist believes that this season's unpredictability could still offer City a way back in the title race - even if they fall 11 points behind the Reds on Sunday.

"You know something? If you’d have asked me last season, I’d have said yes," he told the Liverpool Echo courtesy of TalkSPORT BET. "But I just think that a season is different. And I've said it for a number of weeks now, I think this season, more than ever in recent years, all the teams are capable of beating each other.

"Bournemouth, Brighton, Nottingham Forest [all berating title contenders]. To be fair, Liverpool are the only team that have shown an incredible level of consistency, and they've only had one hiccup, which was a defeat to Forest, who by the way of have been excellent.

"So in normal circumstances, I’d have said yes but I'd be loathed to rule anything out. I wouldn’t even rule Chelsea out at this moment in time, they way it’s going!"
