Jamie Carragher has slammed Cristian Romero after he made another costly mistake during Tottenham's 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the north London derby.

Spurs were beaten against their arch enemy courtesy of Gabriel's second-half winner. The Brazilian headed home Bukayo Saka's inswinging corner to secure a vital three points for the Gunners. However, Romero - and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario - will be particularly frustrated with their roles for the goal.

First, Romero was marking Gabriel in a man-to-man defensive system from the corner, but somehow the Arsenal defender managed to drift by his marker before powering home a free header. Then as Gabriel didn't meet the ball until less than six yards out, Vicario could have come and collected, albeit he did appear to have a number of bodies blocking him from coming out to claim or punch away from danger.

After Arsenal scored, Jamie Carragher, who was attending Newcastle's trip to Wolves as part of Sky Sports coverage on Sunday, decided to criticise Romero and his start to the season. He said on X, formerly known as Twitter: "Romero’s start to the season has been very poor!"

As Carragher said, Romero hasn't had the most positive start to the season. On the opening weekend of the campaign, Romero was highlighted for his role in Jamie Vardy's equaliser against Leicester. The Argentine left Vardy in acres of space at the back post to nod home Abdul Fatawu's cross.

Romero, who impressed and scored in the 4-0 win against Everton in their second game, could have done better for Newcastle's second goal in the 2-1 defeat at St James' Park before the international break. Romero was seen pushing up and leaving Jacob Murphy to run in behind before playing across for Alexander Isak to tap home.

As for Tottenham, defeat against Arsenal leaves them on four points from their first four matches. Spurs sit 13th in the Premier League table and face Coventry next up in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Speaking after the game, Ange Postecoglou said: "I thought it was a tight game all the way along. We controlled it for the most part and got off to a good start. We didn't capitalise on the opportunities and we were unable to get on top of them.

"We lost concentration [for the goal]. We've got some big guys in there who really attack the ball and we just switched off for a second. I think I've said my piece. For the most part we controlled the game today, had good territory and possession but we didn't make the most of it and we got punished."
