Jamie Carragher believes Erling Haaland will not necessarily bring more success to Manchester City.

Haaland was officially unveiled by City on Monday as his £51million move from Borussia Dortmund was confirmed, adding more firepower to a side that won the Premier League and scored 99 goals in the process.

Pep Guardiola has often opted against using a traditional striker in recent seasons, with Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva among those used as a false nine.

While Haaland’s arrival appears to be a scary prospect for the rest of the league, Carragher does not feel it’s a certainty that the 21-year-old will have an immediate impact in his new surroundings.

“[Man City] have so many players now who don’t play through the middle,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“They keep the ball so well and they control the game so well. Maybe they will lose a little bit of that.

“So, I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion that means City are going to win everything.”

He added: “We are talking about one of the world’s greats even at such a young age, but I don’t think anyone should be raising the white flag too early because it’s going to be really interesting how he fits into the team.”

Guardiola’s side lifted the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in five seasons, coming from two goals behind against Aston Villa on the final day of the season to win that match and pip Liverpool to the title by a single point.

There was Champions League disappointment for City at the start of May though, as they collapsed in dramatic fashion late on against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, and Carragher believes it’s in Europe that Haaland could have the most important role to play.

“They have a great team and a great manager, and I actually think Haaland coming in won’t make that much of a difference in terms of how many points they get,” Carragher said.

“They always get in the mid-90s for points anyway, which is a remarkable feat.

“He may have been brought in just to make that difference in those games where they just fell short, maybe more in the Champions League than the Premier League actually.

“He’ll change, he’ll evolve, he’s still a lot to learn, he’s a young player. He’ll learn off one of the greatest coaches in world football. He’ll bring things to his game.

“But he should also remember not to change too much. He is what he is. Powerful, his pace, the goals he gets.”
