Jamie Carragher declared “Carrick’s at the wheel!” in a cheeky tweet after Manchester United’s victory over Villarreal on Tuesday.

The Champions League win meant an ideal start for the caretaker manager, securing the Red Devils’ place in the last-16 with a game spare.

After the final whistle, Liverpool legend Carragher could not help himself but aim a dig at old rival Rio Ferdinand by quoting the ex-defender’s now-infamous line about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He wrote: “Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out, put it on the table & let him sign it.

“Let him write whatever numbers he wants, let him sign the contract. Carrick’s at the wheel man!”

Ferdinand decreed the very same statement after Solskjaer, then the interim United manager, guided United past Paris Saint-Germain in the 2018/19 last-16 while very much the underdog.

On this occasion, Villarreal made Carrick’s men suffer for much of their meeting in Spain, until Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock.

Fred pressed high up the pitch to win the ball from a goal kick, teeing up Ronaldo to chip the goalkeeper from outside the box. Jadon Sancho made it 2-0 in the dying moments after good work from substitutes Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.
