Jamie Carragher tells Jurgen Klopp how to solve Liverpool midfield conundrum as pundit questions Jude Bellingham pursuit
Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp is unhappy with his current midfield but does not feel the possible signing of Jude Bellingham is the answer.
The Reds currently find themselves in the unaccustomed position of being outside the top four. They have won their last four top-flight games and six of eight. But a poor start to the campaign means a title challenge is out of the question.
The Anfield giants are still 15 points adrift of table-topping Arsenal. And they need to make up four points on Manchester United to move into the Champions League qualifying positions.
The Merseysiders have been linked with many players. Klopp has already made one signing, with forward Cody Gakpo arriving from PSV.
But it is the name of Bellingham that continues to be linked with the north-west giants.
Still only 19, the midfielder is a star for both Borussia Dortmund and England. Indeed, he was the Three Lions’ standout player at the recent World Cup.
His Qatar exploits have served to increase speculation over Bellingham’s future. And it has been reported that the talented youngster has his heart set on a move to Liverpool.
It may be that the north-west outfit do make a move for the West Midlander in due course.
And Carragher believes the German tactician has work to do to mould his midfield into an effective unit.
“It feels to me that the midfield has morphed into more of a technical midfield rather than a high energy midfield and that’s what happens when you lose that Wijnaldum figure alongside a holding midfielder,” he told Sky Sports after Liverpool beat Leicester.
“Right now, Liverpool tonight had Jordan Henderson – who isn’t as energetic as three or four years ago – but then the technical player like Thiago – and Harvey Elliott, Carvalho has played there at times.
“This midfield isn’t what you expect or what Jurgen Klopp really wants.”
Carragher prefers others ahead of Bellingham capture
Georginio Wijnaldum starred for Liverpool for five seasons, before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021.
He is now on loan at Roma but a leg fracture picked up in training means he is likely to miss much of the 2022-2023 campaign.
The Netherlands international was the driving force in the Reds midfield, making 237 appearances for the club.
And, while ex-Liverpool star Carragher would welcome Bellingham to the club, he feels a more solid addition is now needed.
“There’s talk of looking to bring in Jude Bellingham, why wouldn’t you, he’s a great player but they also need another midfielder to help them defensively,” he added.
“Bellingham is a midfielder who likes to get forward, score goals and assists and it would be fantastic if Liverpool could get him but they need a Wijnaldum figure to come in in the summer.”
Bellingham a player in demand
Liverpool are not the only club linked with Bellingham. Manchester City have been mentioned in connection with the young schemer.
And Spanish giants Real Madrid are also thought to hold an interest. Whether or not Los Blancos have the funds to lure him to the Bernabeu is open to question.
And it was recently suggested that they are not prepared to offer crazy money for the superstar.
Liverpool seem to be in pole position, with the player’s father reportedly steering him towards Anfield.
But, if Carragher gets his way, Klopp may look for a different type of player before making that meg-bucks move.
