Jamie Carragher reckons Frenkie de Jong can have a “huge” impact on a top-four battle race almost impossible to call if he signs for Manchester United.

The Red Devils are chasing the Barcelona star as they hunt midfield reinforcements. They have already signed free agent Christian Eriksen but know they need to bolster further.

And Netherlands international De Jong remains their top target, although a deal is proving tough to negotiate.

New Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag feels he can get the best out of the midfielder. The pair brought the best out of each other at Ajax, which led Barcelona to spend big on him in 2019.

And according to Carragher, De Jong can have an impressive early influence on Ten Hag’s long-term project.

“It’ll be interesting if they get De Jong,” the pundit told Sky Sports News. “I do think he’s a top-class player and I think he would make a huge difference for them.”

United need a cutting edge if they are to beat Tottenham, Arsenal and perhaps Chelsea to a top-four Premier League finish.

Chelsea finished third last season, but inconsistency late on meant they had to look over their shoulders once or twice at their London rivals.

In the end, it was Spurs who finished fourth and Arsenal in fifth, with United ending the season in sixth.

Ahead of the new season, Spurs have made the biggest transfer statement this summer. They have captured six new signings across the pitch. Arsenal have also made big moves, including for Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus.

Chelsea are just getting started in defence with Kalidou Koulibaly’s arrival, while Raheem Sterling is their new attacker.

Carragher warns Man Utd of top-four battle

United have added Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez, but De Jong would rival the other signings from the top-four hopefuls.

Carragher insisted that the first priority for Man Utd is getting back into the Champions League and then thinking about a title charge “in the next couple of years”.

He added: “But it won’t be easy to get back in the top four this season – not just for United but for any team who are normally in the top four.

“You’d expect [Manchester] City and Liverpool to do it because they’re always going for the title, but you look at how strong Chelsea will be and the signings they’re bringing in, Tottenham’s work as well, Arsenal also.

“So I think competitively now in terms of getting in the top four, it’s really tough, and it’s proven that way for a lot of Manchester United managers with great CVs in the past.

“But there’s no doubt this manager has a really good CV and they made a really good start in pre-season.”

United need more than De Jong

But while Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal are motoring through their transfer business, there is a feeling that United still have a lot more work to do.

There is talk of a new goalscoring signing such as Ajax’s Antony, but talks over that deal are proving tough like with De Jong.

Right-back is also an area of concern, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future unclear after Ten Hag’s arrival.

While their rivals can boast about their arrivals so far, United have plenty of puzzles still to solve before the transfer window shuts.
