Jamie Vardy signs new four-year Leicester contract that will keep him at club until age of 35

Jamie Vardy has signed a new four-year contract with Leicester, the England striker committing himself to the club until 2022, when he will be 35 years old.

Vardy, a star of Leicester’s memorable 2016 title triumph, has scored 88 goals in 233 games for the club since his arrival from then non-League Fleetwood in 2012.

He told the club’s website: “Everybody knows how I feel about playing for this football club and it’s a great feeling to know that I can look forward to another four years as a Leicester City player.

“The journey that me, the team and the club have been on in the past few years has been incredible. Going into the new season, it’s an exciting time for Leicester City and I’m delighted to be part of it.”

Vardy signed his previous deal in 2016 amid reported interest from Arsenal. The club will hope the new contract wards off any potential further inquiries over his services.

Vardy’s exploits during the 2015-16 campaign catapulted him to the forefront of the national game. He scored 24 times as the Foxes won the title, including a record-breaking sequence of goals in 11 successive games.

Meanwhile, Leicester have strengthened their defence with the signings of Caglar Soyuncu and Filip Benkovic.

Soyuncu, who has been capped 15 times by Turkey, completed a £19 million move from Freiburg after signing a five-year deal. The 22-year-old played 30 times for Freiburg last season as they finished 15th in the Bundesliga.

Croatian Benkovic has moved from Dinamo Zagreb on a five-year deal for about £13 million.

The 21-year-old arrives at the King Power Stadium on the back of an impressive 2017-18 campaign with Zagreb in which he made 30 appearances in all competitions and helped them clinch the Croatian league title.

“Filip is an exciting young player who has the potential to develop even more at Leicester,” manager Claude Puel said last night.

“He has made a big contribution to Dinamo Zagreb over the last three years and has also benefited from experiencing European football.”

Soyuncu and Benkovic took Leicester’s total of summer signings to seven along with Jonny Evans, James Maddison, Ricardo Pereira, Danny Ward and Rachid Ghezzal.

The defensive pair will link up with their new team-mates ahead of this evening’s Premier League opener against Manchester United.
