Japhet Tanganga has reportedly come to an ‘agreement in principle’ over his next move, although the interested club might be put off by what Tottenham are demanding.

Tanganga is a product of the Tottenham academy. He made his debut for the north London outfit in September 2019 and has gone on to play in 43 matches across all competitions.

Last season, he made 19 appearances for Tottenham, with 11 of those coming in the Premier League.

Tanganga’s campaign was ended in February by a knee injury. He is now back to full fitness and made Antonio Conte’s squad for the pre-season tour of South Korea.

Despite this, Conte is willing to let the Englishman go. Spurs have bolstered the manager’s defensive ranks by signing Djed Spence and Clement Lenglet this summer.

Tanganga is versatile, with the ability to play as a centre-half or right-back. But these new arrivals mean he is unlikely to get much game time in the new campaign.

Reigning Serie A champions AC Milan rate Tanganga highly and want to take him to Italy. Last week, Spurs chief Fabio Paratici met with his Milan counterparts to discuss a move.

Sky Sports claim these talks were ‘positive’. However, there haven’t been many updates on the situation since then.

Japhet Tanganga agrees AC Milan switch

According to Sport Witness, who cite Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Milan want to land a new defender and midfielder after beating Leeds to the signing of Charles De Ketelaere.

Their first choice in defence is Tanganga. And the Rossoneri already have an ‘agreement in principle’ with the 23-year-old for him to join, the report claims.

Milan want to take him on loan for the season, while also having the option to buy next summer. However, Spurs are trying to get Milan to agree to an obligation to buy.

This demand is threatening Tanganga’s switch as Milan don’t want to be forced into a permanent signing. And the player will not wait ‘indefinitely’ for the two clubs to sort things out.

The San Siro remains Tanganga’s most likely next destination. No other clubs have come in for the former England U21 international so far.

But Spurs will have to soften their stance if the player is to get his wish.

An option to buy will still be good for Spurs. Even if they are not guaranteed money next year, Milan will still want to sign him permanently if Tanganga does well.

The player is behind the likes of Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Lenglet in the pecking order at centre-back. On the right flank, he will struggle to get in the team ahead of Spence, Matt Doherty or Emerson Royal.

Due to this, it makes sense that Tanganga wants to leave Spurs so he can become a first-team regular elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Sevilla will find it tough to capture Sergio Reguilon from Spurs amid rival interest from a major European club.
