Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has called India pacer Jasprit Bumrah one of the best in the world after the fast bowler’s amazing performance in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England in the UK, which India leads 2-1 as the final outcome of the series is awaited.

During the Test series, Bumrah became the quickest Indian fast bowler to 100 Test wickets, a milestone he reached in his 24th Test match, bettering the record of the great Kapil Dev. his spell in the second innings of the fourth Test match against England fetched him praises from all around the cricketing fraternity and his Mumbai Indians bowling coach Shane Bond was one of them.

“We’ve had seven years together and you get to know someone pretty well. He was this wiry, scrawny kid who had just come off a knee reconstruction and didn’t play more than a couple of games in my first season (in the IPL). The next thing he’s playing for India and he’s now one of the best in the world,” Bond told Sportsmail.

Shane Bond Reveals Why Jasprit Bumrah’s Unique Action Makes His Bouncers So Deceptive

The fourth Test match between England and India, which was played at the Oval so the visitors crush the hosts by 157 runs on the final day of the match. This was after India made a grand comeback after losing the third Test at Leeds by an innings and 76 runs in which they were bowled out for 78 runs in the 1st innings.

Bumrah set up the victory for India by picking up the wickets of Ollie Pope and Jonny Bairstow in the post-lunch session on day five, as England tried to chase 368 to win. He clean bowled both the batsmen with sheer pace, especially Bairstow who was bowled with a sheering yorker.

The right-hand pacer from Gujarat had copped some criticism for his 10-ball over at the Lord’s Test to James Anderson in which the veteran Englishman was peppered with some short balls and bouncers.

Speaking about Bumrah’s bouncers, Shane Bond, who had worked closely with him in MI camp, credited his supple wrist and unique action for giving him the deceptiveness needed to fool batsmen.

“He has these amazing supple wrists so he can move it around, which gives him the ability to swing the ball. His bowling position, most people deliver it here (Bond lifts his bowling hand up parallel with his ear), whereas he delivers it way out in front of him so the batsman has less time to adapt. That makes his bouncer so difficult to see. Most other bowlers will use a method that’s distinguishable – he just flicks the wrist and whammo, it’s on you. That’s why he hurries guys up,” Shane Bond added.

Bumrah will be seen in action on September 19 when Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening match of the second half of the IPL 2021 in UAE.
