Joe Gomez will want to stay at Liverpool instead of leaving for more game time amid their quadruple push this season, one pundit has claimed.

The 24-year-old centre-back has enjoyed something of a rollercoaster spell at Anfield following his 2015 signing. After initial injury problems, he played a key part in the Reds’ Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

Last term, he spent most of the campaign out with another lengthy injury issue.

And while he has stayed fit so far this season, Gomez has found regular game time hard to come by. Indeed, last summer’s centre-back addition Ibrahima Konate has taken the third-choice spot in Jurgen Klopp’s ranks.

Gomez has therefore had to settle for playing right-back for when Trent Alexander-Arnold needs a rest. With his contract expiring in 2024, reports have claimed that Gomez could leave Liverpool. Aston Villa and newly-promoted Fulham are supposedly showing interest.

According to former goalkeeper Paul Robinson, though, the Reds’ quadruple push has meant Gomez is “proving his worth” to Klopp.

“Gomez is proving his worth and I think they’ll keep him,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“I don’t think Liverpool will have a problem persuading players to stay either. Yes, players want to play every week but when you are competing for four trophies it is different.#

“If you are in all of the cup competitions until the latter stages, most players will get 20 appearances in a season.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re not a regular starter. If you are a valued squad member you will play your part.

“Where would you want to go? Why would you want to leave Liverpool? They are one of if not the best team in Europe right now.”

Gomez has proved a valuable player to Liverpool and deserves to stay.

However, with his contract running out in 2024, Reds chiefs will soon have to make a decision over his future.

The 24-year-old has, when required to step in, not looked out of place – despite his lack of game time compared to Konate, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk.

Indeed, Gomez captained the Liverpool team in their first two Carabao Cup wins over Norwich and Preston.

He also played in the FA Cup quarter-final win over Nottingham Forest and kept calm amid a barrage of late pressure from the hosts.

Gomez’s other main contributions have come in the Champions League, where he has made seven appearances.

He recently played in the quarter-final second-leg win over Benfica. In the Premier League, Gomez put in a solid display away at Newcastle and has proved he can still offer a great deal to Klopp going forwards.
