Everything seemed to be going according to plan for Johanna Konta Wednesday at the US Open. The 13th-seed handily won the opening set of her second round match against Tsvetana Pironkova and was in good position to close out a victory.

But then, a scary scene unfolded on Court 17.

Konta, serving to stay in the set trailing 5-6, suddenly fell to the court. The oppressive heat and 80 percent humidity had taken over Konta’s body, and the 24-year-old was heard hyperventilating on the baseline.

“I started shaking violently and my heart rate really went up,” Konta told reporters. “I feel like my whole body is in shock. My heart rate spiked; my vision became blurred.”

The medical staff quickly rushed to Konta, providing her with ice bags and cold water. Remarkably, just 15 minutes later, Konta returned to the court to finish out her service game.

Though Pironkova took the second set, Konta appeared refreshed and recharged after taking a bathroom break to change her clothes between sets. Konta controlled the third set from the get-go, handily winning 6-2 to punch her ticket to the third round.

After the match, Konta acknowledged that her overwhelming emotion was not one of relief.

“I’m feeling a little embarrassed,” Konta told reporters after the match.“I’m not a drama queen.”
