John Bennett QUITS as Rangers chairman with immediate effect for health reasons

John Bennett will step down from his position as Rangers chairman, the club have confirmed.

Bennett has been in the role for around a year-and-a-half but is quitting, citing health reasons. It is believed that there is "no immediate plan" to find his replacement at this stage but the Ibrox club say former John Gilligan will fill in temporarily until a permanent incumbent can be found.

The 61-year-old has also been acting as chief executive in recent months since the departure of James Bisgrove as the club still seeks his successor. The club and its board has been taking the brunt of criticism from supporters recently amid underachievement on the park as they continue to operate in Celtic's shadow. As a result, off-pitch affairs, the way the club is run and particularly recruitment have been called into question.

Bennett initially got involved with Rangers as an investor and was then vice-chairman before stepping up to the main job last year after Douglas Park moved on. He still holds a 5.51 per cent stake in RIFC plc

There has been increasing pressure this year though thanks to the aforementioned struggles and also the saga with Ibrox as they were forced to play early home games this season at Hampden. That came about because of a botched order for materials for work to the Copland Road stand resulting in delays.

Reports of Bennett's imminent resignation came about this morning but the club has now confirmed it. A statement reads: "The Board of Rangers Football Club today announces Chairman, John Bennett, is stepping down with immediate effect for health reasons.

"The Board wants to sincerely thank John for his service and significant commitment over the last nine years and wishes him a full and speedy recovery. It is requested his and his family’s privacy is respected at this time. Former Director, John Gilligan, will temporarily fulfil the role of Chairman until a permanent replacement is appointed.

"The Board thanks John for stepping in at short notice and believes his experience in senior business roles throughout a long and successful career, and also, as a former Director of Rangers, will be invaluable at this time.

"The Board is undertaking a robust process with the help of professional advisors to fill the roles of CEO and Chairperson. In the meantime, the club’s executive management team will continue to lead the club on a day-to-day basis."
