John O’Groats to Land's End route to get World Championships
Plans are being made for a John O’Groats to Land’s End (JOGLE) World Championships.
Journalist and marathon runner Will Cockerell is launching the ‘UK End to End Championships’ for runners keen to take on the route that runs from mainland UK’s most northerly and southerly points.
Under current plans, runners will pay £250 to enter. The race will have a prize pot of £100,000, with £35,000 going to the fastest man and woman each, and £15,000 going to the runners up. However, Cockerell said these prizes would be ‘subject to media, sponsor and TV interest’.
Cockerell said the End to End Championships would 'raise the profile of this great event and complex examination of the human spirit'.
Carlo Molinaro currently holds the women’s record for the route, having run it in 12 days, 30 minutes and 14 seconds last year, while the official men’s record is controversially held by Andi Rivett with nine days, two hours, although many ultrarunners believe the true record to be held by Dan Lawson, who last year ran a time of nine days, 21 hours.
In fact, Cockerell has lobbied Guinness World Records for Rivett’s time to be removed, as he doubts the accuracy of his attempt. He started a petition calling on the body to remove Rivett's 'fake' record, citing the fact that he had 'no multi-day experience' and 'never produced another quality piece of running in his career'.
The competition is currently set to take place from August 1, 2021 to November 1, 2022. According to Cockerell, a number of prominent endurance runners are considering taking part, including Camille Herron, Michael Wardian, Dan Lawson and Sharon Gayter, who held the women’s record before Molinaro.
