Jon Jones Arrest Warrant Issued, Offer Extended for Self Turn-In

The Albuquerque Police Department on Monday followed through on issuing a felony arrest warrant for UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, but has offered for him to turn himself in.

This latest development was announced via the Albuquerque PD's official Twitter account.

An Albuquerque PD officer explained to MMAWeekly.com that an offer was extended for Jones to turn himself in. At the time of this report, the department was still waiting to see if Jones would follow through on the offer.

Jones was initially being sought for questioning due to his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run car accident that occurred on Sunday in Albuquerque, N.M., that could have seen him charged with a misdemeanor for Leaving the Scene of an Accident. The charge on Monday was elevated to a felony.

Jones was allegedly driving a rental car, ran a red light, and struck a vehicle driven by a pregnant woman. After causing the accident, Jones, who was identified as the driver by an off-duty police officer, fled the scene. The woman went to the hospital. Although her pregnancy was not believed to be threatened, she suffered a fractured arm and wrist.

With the woman suffering an injury, the charge against Jones for leaving the scene was elevated from a misdemeanor to felony Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

The UFC has not yet commented on the prospect of Jones remaining in his scheduled May 23 title defense against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, but on Sunday released a statement that said, in part, “We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
