Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that he will stay at Newcastle until the end of the 2023-24 campaign after admitting he is just three games away from activating a one-year contract extension.

The 30-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the upcoming campaign. However, the player has revealed details of a clause that means he will be hanging around for a good while longer.

Shelvey was a key player under Eddie Howe last season but faces strong competition for a midfield starting role. The likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff are also pushing for spots in a packed engine room.

However, speaking after Newcastle‘s 1-0 friendly loss to Mainz, Shelvey revealed his current contract situation.

He told reporters: “I’ve got three games to get another year, and hopefully I should do that this season. I mean, I’d be a bit worried if I didn’t!

“At the end of the day you’re always playing for a new contract and I’m not thick, I’m not getting younger, I’m 30 years of age and I look about 40! You just want to be part of it.

“The only way for this club is up and a lot of people would want to be in my shoes.”

Shelvey will take part in his seventh season in the famous black and white. He joined from Swansea City in a deal worth £16million back in January 2016.

Newcastle not the same club

However, the England international admits the times have certainly changed at St James’ Park.

He added: “Positivity is great around the club. We went through a really bad spell.

“I’ve been six-and-a-half years now, we know what the craic is around the city and what you can and can’t do.

“It’s a really good place to be at the minute, the city is buzzing. My missus and kids love it up here.”

Howe’s men get the new season up and running with a home game against Nottingham Forest on August 6.
