Jordan Henderson and Bertrand Traore had to be separated by their Ajax teammates after a furious disagreement during the Dutch side's Europa League win over Besiktas.

Ajax was 3-0 up when Traore conceded possession during the second half, and captain Henderson was visibly furious with the winger, launching a verbal tirade in his direction.

As the pair got in each other's faces, two Ajax players intervened, pushing Henderson and Traore in opposite directions, with both players angrily gesticulating as they walked away from each other.

Henderson appeared to say, "F------ embarrassing, pass the f------ ball" as he walked away, but after the match he had calmed down as he reflected on the incident after the 4-0 win.

He said: "My moment with Traore? If you watch me play over the years, that's pretty normal to be honest. Intimidating? It's football! We want to win, we want to improve! If we concede a goal there is still much time left. Sometimes you will have words with each other but it's good, it keeps everybody on their toes."

The flashpoint comes after a week in which Henderson defended his teammates after criticism of Ajax's forwards from sections of the Dutch media following a slow start to the season.

“It’s always about our strikers," Henderson, whose Ajax side sits ninth in the Eredivisie table, said. "That’s apparently a big deal here, but not for me. For me it’s always about the team, not about individuals. Our strikers have their own qualities and it’s up to them to show in training who should play. And also who is fit. We have a lot of games to go.”
