Chelsea midfielder Jorginho now wants to remain at Stamford Bridge, according to his agent, despite previously harbouring a dream of going back to Italy.

The 30-year-old spent time at Hellas Verona and Napoli in Serie A before joining Chelsea in summer 2018. The Blues paid an initial £50million to land Jorginho.

He has gone on to win several trophies with Chelsea, including the Champions League and Europa League.

Jorginho played 47 times last season as the West London club added the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to their collection.

His agent, Joao Santos, has previously stated the Italian would like to go back to Serie A. Potential destinations include Juventus, AC Milan, or even a return to Napoli.

But it appears the player now hopes to stay where he is. During an interview with Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Santos said (via the Evening Standard): “Chelsea are the priority. The contract will expire in 2023, I think we will talk about the renewal from September.”

The fact Chelsea is Jorginho’s ‘priority’ suggests he is open to signing a new long-term deal with the club.

This has the potential to be his last contract, as he is now 30 years old.

Jorginho talks now surely on the cards

It would be a good move for Chelsea to begin contract talks in the next few months. With Jorginho’s current terms expiring next year, sorting a renewal will prevent Tuchel’s side from losing him on a free transfer.

There have been rumours of Jorginho being part of a swap deal for Matthijs de Ligt.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus want Jorginho as well as a big fee in return for the Dutch centre-back.

The fact Jorginho now wants to stay at Chelsea complicates matters. It is obviously good news for them, but it also means they will have to find a new player to use in the De Ligt negotiations.

Amid plenty of exit links, Jorginho has now taken one step further to remaining at Chelsea.

Perhaps his main goal is to win the Premier League before moving back to Italy or retiring. Chelsea’s last Prem triumph came in 2017, the year before Jorginho’s arrival.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip has the latest on Chelsea’s reported interest in Cristiano Ronaldo.
