Jose Aldo Willing to Sit and Wait for UFC Title Shot

Jose Aldo Willing to Sit and Wait for UFC Title Shot

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has fought just 13 seconds in the past year, and it appears that might have to do for the next year as well. At least, depending on how the UFC plans to handle the featherweight title picture.

The UFC featherweight championship is currently in limbo after Conor McGregor united his interim belt with Aldo's title at UFC 194 in December. McGregor decided to forego defending the belt right away, and instead forced the UFC's hand into allowing him to move up to lightweight and challenge champion Rafael dos Anjos without relinquishing the title.

If he defeats dos Anjos at UFC 197 on March 5, the brash Irishman would become the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two different weight classes simultaneously. Meanwhile, he leaves the 145-pound division in limbo.

With the championship on hold, Aldo is willing to sit on the sidelines and wait. After more than a decade without a loss prior to the McGregor fight, Aldo and his camp believe it is his right to wait for another shot at gold… even if he's not the first one to get a crack at it, if and when the smoke clears.

“What I can say is that that’s our idea right now,” Andre Pederneiras, Aldo's manager, said during a recent media scrum in Rio de Janeiro, according to MMAFighting.com. “It might change tomorrow, but that’s our idea right now.”

It could prove a lengthy wait for Aldo depending on how things play out. McGregor will fight dos Anjos in March and then, presumably, defend the featherweight belt in his next fight, which would likely put him on target for UFC 200 in July.

The problem for Aldo is that Frankie Edgar has been on a tear over the past couple of years and was told in December that he'd likely get the winner of Aldo vs. McGregor. So it wouldn't be a stretch for the UFC to make Aldo wait, while Edgar challenges for the belt, although Edgar's title shot has seemingly been on perpetual hold.

If that happens, so be it, Aldo and Pederneiras appear willing to wait.

“Aldo believes he has this right, and so do I,” added Pederneiras. “He will only fight for the belt. He was undefeated for 10 years. He thinks he has the same right others had. Some fighters are getting rematches they deserve less than Aldo. If it’s going to be soon or in 10 years, he thinks he deserves a title fight.”
