Jose Mourinho has been sacked as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, with former midfielder Ryan Mason taking over first-team duties. The Portuguese leaves just six days before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City and with the club seventh in the Premier League table. Spurs drew 2-2 with Everton on Friday in a damaging blow to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. The result came alongside an injury to Harry Kane, who is a doubt for Sunday’s Wembley final.

Mourinho arrived at Spurs in November 2019 and succeeded Mauricio Pochettino in north London. He signed a contract keeping him at the club until 2023. After a difficult first season that was hit by injuries and disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, Mourinho led Spurs to the top of the Premier League table last November with a 2-0 win over Manchester City. The club were tipped for a title challenge but it faltered over Christmas and into the New Year following a dismal run of form that saw them drop out of the top four. Spurs were also knocked out of the Europa League in embarrassing fashion after losing 3-0 to Dinamo Zagreb.

Mourinho has now been sacked from his last three clubs in the Premier League, following spells at Chelsea and Manchester United. RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann is the early favourite to succeed him with Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers also in the frame.
