Josh Cullen is ready to make up for lost time at West Ham this season, starting against the club he has spent the last two years with.

The midfielder, now 24, made his Premier League debut five years ago but struggled to establish himself in the West Ham first team as a string of different managers came and went.

Following the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini in 2018, Cullen made the decision to move south of the river and enjoyed two years on loan at the Valley, becoming a key member of the Charlton side.

Now, with Moyes looking to bring younger faces into his side, the midfielder wants to make his mark at his boyhood club, beginning with Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie against the Addicks.

"Like I’ve always said all along, through all the loans, the end goal is to be at West Ham," said Cullen. "I’m 24 now so it’s time to make it happen.

"I think sometimes people think that I’m 24, and if I was good enough I’d be playing by now, but you see teams buy players who are 25 or 26 from the Championship, so I don’t see the difference between that and me going there and getting experience and getting games."

He won promotion from League One through the play-offs under Lee Bowyer in his first year at Charlton before tasting the heartache of relegation on the final day of last season. However, Cullen feels the pain has helped prepare him for the rigours of top-flight football should he be given his chance.

Speaking in Tuesday's matchday programme, Cullen said: "I could have stayed around at West Ham, but I wanted to go out on loan and get games, develop myself and improve myself and become a better player so when I do eventually get the chance here and I’m lucky enough to break in and get some games, then I’m the best player I possibly can be here, and I’m a better player for having gone out and playing those games."

Moyes will hope the involvement of players with a point to prove will inject some life into his side after their nightmare start to the Premier League season on Saturday. With a difficult run of Premier League fixtures over the next two months, the cup might be their best hope of keeping spirits high in the coming weeks.
