Josh Doig lined up by AS Roma as ex Hibs man set for speedy Serie A return

Josh Doig could win a quick return to Serie A with Italian giants AS Roma keen to add him to their squad, according to a report.

The former Hibs left-back with relegated with new club Sassuolo, who he only joined in January from Hellas Verona. But he could be quickly handed a lifeline Daniele de Rossi seeing the Scotland under-21s star as a good fit for his squad after being impressed with his performances since moving to Italy.

Discussions have already taken place between the two clubs, claims Hibs Observer. It's thought Sassuolo could lose a number of players in a fire sale after losing their top flight status after 10 years of being in with the big boys.

De Rossi replaced Jose Mourinho in January and guided Roma to the semi-finals of the Europa League and sixth in Serie A, missing out on a Champions League spot again. Doig has been identified as someone who can improve his squad.

The 22-year-old left Hibs for Verona in 2022 and made 22 appearances in his first campaign. He continued to impress the following season and made the switch in January.

Before moving to I Neroverdi, he looked destined for Marseille and was even at the airport ready to fly to France before the deal was killed. Sassuolo came in with more money and so that's where he ended up. But he couldn't help save them from relegation and now looks set to be on the move again.
