Josh Hazlewood will return to the Chennai Super Kings squad for the second leg of the IPL 2021, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to Cricbuzz.

The Australian pacer had earlier pulled out of the tournament when it was in India in April-May. The franchise replaced him with his compatriot Jason Behrendorff. Now with the tournament to be completed in the UAE – the same venue for the T20 World Cup – Josh Hazlewood has made himself available.

This would, however, mean that CSK would have to release Behrendorff from their squad, according to the tournament’s replacement rule.

The lanky pacer recently made his return to Australia’s T20 setup for their tours to the West Indies and Bangladesh. He picked 12 wickets in 8 games on those two tours at a superb economy of 6.55.

Josh Hazlewood made his IPL debut last season in the UAE for CSK; he featured in 3 matches and could manage just a solitary wicket, but again was parsimonious – leaking at just 6.40 runs an over.

All teams are required to submit their final squads for the remainder of the season to the BCCI by August 20.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) contingent reach Dubai

Captain MS Dhoni and some of the other members of the CSK contingent have already reached Dubai, where they will take on the Mumbai Indians on September 19 in the first game of the second half.

After a disappointing season last year – CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time – the Yello Army roared back with 5 wins in 7 matches this year before the tournament was suspended.

The addition of Moeen Ali has been a revelation for the side. The England all-rounder, while batting at number 3, has scored 206 runs at a strike rate of 157.25, while Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, and Ravindra Jadeja have handled things very well at the top and lower order.

In the bowling department, Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran have been CSK’s leading pacers with Jadeja, Ali, Shardul Thakur and Lungi Ngidi playing the supporting role.
