Chelsea have expanded their list of right-back targets with the inclusion of Josip Juranovic, who also has admirers at Manchester United, according to reports.

Juranovic joined Celtic last summer and became a Scottish Premiership winner at the first time of asking. He made 32 appearances in all competitions during his debut season, scoring five goals.

In the process, the 26-year-old has caught the attention of clubs in more competitive leagues. For example, Atletico Madrid emerged as contenders to take him to La Liga a couple of months ago.

Now, 90min have revealed that Juranovic could end up in the Premier League instead. Indeed, the right-back is now under consideration by Chelsea.

The Blues are in the market for a right-back before the transfer window closes. They recently tied down Cesar Azpilicueta to a longer contract, but it has become more common to see him in the back three.

Therefore, they may still require further competition for Reece James in the wing-back role. To that end, they are now keeping tabs on Juranovic.

Celtic would be looking for more than £15million to part company with Juranovic, who has revealed his enthusiasm to play in the Champions League with them.

But he could get that platform with Chelsea if the Stamford Bridge side can bring him to the Premier League.

Alternatively, the likes of Denzel Dumfries and Kyle Walker-Peters are still on Chelsea’s shortlist. But both of those options may be more expensive than Juranovic.

The extra complication for Chelsea, though, is that other than Atletico Madrid, Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the Croatia international.

Man Utd could let go of Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer. It would leave Diogo Dalot as their only natural option at right-back.

Therefore, United are looking at players who can provide more competition. Like Chelsea, they admire Inter Milan’s Dumfries, but also Juranovic.

Josip Juranovic might make more sense for Chelsea

If choosing between the two clubs, Chelsea may seem the more sensible placement for Juranovic.

He has no prior Premier League experience, so it is hard to tell how he would get on in the competition. With that in mind, perhaps a backup role for a big club would be the most sensible next step to start with.

United are probably looking for a guaranteed upgrade on their existing options. Chelsea, on the other hand, merely need support for James.

If Juranovic was at Chelsea last season, he would have got decent gametime during James’ injury absence. Therefore, he would be on his toes, waiting for opportunities.

At the age of 26, it is a good point in his career to try his luck on an even bigger stage. But if not, staying with Celtic – who have him under contract until 2026 – would not be the worst idea either.
