Juan Mata could line up against Man Utd next season after a report revealed the prospect of playing for a Premier League rival has been considered.

The Red Devils recently confirmed Mata will depart the club when his contract expires on June 30. The Spanish playmaker, 34, spent eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford, though saw his influence decline greatly as the seasons came and went.

Indeed, Mata was afforded a paltry 409 minutes of action across all competitions last season.

Manchester United were reportedly left disappointed when learning Mata spurned the opportunity to take a role behind the scenes.

That was the view from the Manchester Evening News, who noted an administrative role would’ve been in the offing had he stayed. The club also reportedly view him as a prime candidate to become a technical director like Darren Fletcher down the line.

However, Mata does not intend to hang up his boots just yet. Reports have indicated he could return to Spain or take a new challenge in America with an MLS side.

But according to the Times, the idea of joining another Premier League side has not been ruled out.

Juan Mata future not yet decided

The outlet state Mata could yet remain in England’s top flight despite receiving offers from La Liga sides.

Mata is yet to make a concrete decision on where he wishes to go next, though the general feeling from the player is that he still believes he can contribute at Premier League level.

While no specific clubs are mentioned, it is not out of the realms of possibility interest will materialise.

Indeed, Christian Eriksen was a revelation at Brentford upon signing a short-term contract in January. The two playmakers share many similarities in their game and the Dane’s impact when featuring regularly could serve as inspiration for Mata.

Eriksen-style move perfect way to bow out?

Man Utd fans would surely not begrudge Mata if he did indeed join a Premier League rival.

How much the veteran has left in the tank remains to be seen. Though given the fact he has rarely featured at Old Trafford over the last 24 months, he will surely have a point to prove if securing a move within England.

Eriksen’s impact serves as a prime example of how classy stars can influence top level football despite their advancing age.

A move to a mid-table side where he’ll feature week in week out might be the perfect way to round out his storied career in England.
