Curtis Jones was named man of the match after marking his England debut with a stunning goal in a brilliant performance as the Three Lions ran out 3-0 victors over Greece. The Liverpool midfielder wrapped up the win with an audacious flick late on, but his performance had already been setting tongues wagging.

Taking to social media after the game, Jones wrote: “Dream debut, grateful!!” he wrote. “See you at Wembley”. Unsurprisingly, a number of high-profile names soon followed suit to congratulate the Reds star.

Virgil van Dijk and Jude Bellingham were among those to respond with emojis, as the Liverpool captain posted a flame and eye heart emojis, while the Real Madrid star shared three love hearts.

Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott, Jarell Quansah, Jay Spearing, James McConnell, Kaide Gordon, Rhys Williams, Bobby Clark, Ezri Konsa and Jacob Ramsey also replied with a variety of emojis following the Reds star’s debut to remember.

Elsewhere in the comments on his post on Instagram, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain wrote, “My guy!”, accompanied by a flame and clapping emojis.

Dominic Solanke praised his goal by posting, “Finish”, while Ryan Graveberch called his team-mate, “Special”.

Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg wrote, “Congratulations Jonsey”, along with two love hearts, two flames and a clapping emoji.

England team-mates Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers posted: “What a player”, and “Playerrrrr” respectively, accompanied by love heart and eye heart emojis. Meanwhile, Declan Rice shared, “Buzzing for you Curt”, with a love heart and clapping emoji.

Elsewhere in the Three Lions camp, Ollie Watkins wrote, “Well done bro”, while Angel Gomes shared, “Partnaaaaa”, on Jones’ post.

Man City star Jack Grealish would post on his own Instagram story to praise the Liverpool star as he wrote: “Well done boys!! Top performance and especially Curtis Jones! What a player!”

It’s fair to say Jones has blown away his England team-mates, supporters and pundits alike with his performance against Greece. He had already caught the eye in Three Lions training to leave Harry Kane amazed, with his international captain heard shouting “Yes Curtis, good!” and “Brilliant, Curt, brilliant, Curt!” after the midfielder returned a four-goal haul in one practice match.

Yet, his performance for England, following on from a superb run of form for Liverpool, is no surprise to those of a Reds persuasion. The 23-year-old has often stood out for his club, with it being only unfortunate injuries that have prevented him from really nailing down a place.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp previously shared how Jones was the future for his side, while Arne Slot has regularly praised the midfielder since taking over as head coach.

And his former Reds Under-18s and Under-19s manager Steven Gerrard has known just how talented Jones is all along, having overseen his 2017/18 campaign at academy level where he shone with a whopping 16 goals and six assists from just 25 appearances in the U18 Premier League, UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup.

Gerrard would also take to Instagram following Jones’ England debut to praise his former midfielder, posting on his story: “What a player. Fine the FA and all the coaches for being late.”

Seven seasons on from starring under Gerrard in the Academy, the cat is very much out of the bag regarding Curtis Jones. But England have only just learned what the Liverpool camp already knew.
