Liverpool have held negotiations with Borussia Dortmund over potentially fast-tracking a deal for Jude Bellingham to January 2023, claims a report.

Jurgen Klopp has identified the England midfielder as the man to mould his midfield around. Julian Ward is understood to have been laying the groundwork for a blockbuster deal for the 19-year-old next summer.

The Bundesliga side made it clear earlier in the summer that Bellingham would not be sold in the current transfer window.

Liverpool though have been at the forefront of the chase to land the talented former Birmingham man. And Football Insider even report the Reds have a “verbal agreement” in place to sign the star.

But now, even with that agreement between the clubs, Liverpool have returned with the idea of speeding up a deal. The Reds are looking to push through a transfer in the January transfer window.

Klopp sees no problems with Jude Bellingham

Klopp would no doubt welcome an early arrival for the player, who he is a huge admirer of. Only last month he was asked about the possibility of signing the Stourbridge-born star.

“He’s not on the market, so that’s the first problem with that player,” Klopp told the press at Kirkby. “Well, that’s the only problem with that player!”

It would likely take a record fee for an English player to see Dortmund change their stance.

Man City paid £100m for Jack Grealish last summer and Liverpool and FSG would have to top that to get Dortmund to sell in the winter.

But a move for Bellingham will not solve Klopp’s immediate midfield problem. Only a couple of weeks ago the German was insistent that Liverpool had enough cover in the middle of the park. But after a slow start to the season and injuries to Thiago, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diogo Jota, the Reds boss has had a change of heart.

Klopp: ‘I was wrong’

Klopp admitted on Friday that Liverpool were hunting for a new midfielder.

“You were all right and I was wrong” said Klopp: “That changed of course.

“I know we have had this discussion since it all started. And I am the one who said we don’t need a midfielder and you were all right and I was wrong.

“That’s the situation. There is really nothing more to say about it. We are looking for it. And if it is the right player we need him and if it is not the right player we don’t need him.”

Dortmund for their part are still attempting to keep Bellingham, who is tied to the club until 2025. He has already been appointed to Borussia Dortmund ‘s leadership group and named third captain. And BVB are hoping to convince Bellingham to stay by increasing his salary and also signing his younger brother Jobe.
