Jude Bellingham has described James Maddison's sensational performance against Manchester City as "different gravy" after Tottenham ran out thumping 4-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

Maddison scored a first-half brace for Spurs as they responded to that 2-1 defeat to Ipswich with a fine display against an out-of-sorts City, with Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson netting after the break.

Celebrating his 28th birthday, Maddison gave Ange Postecoglou's side the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour after latching on to Dejan Kulusevski's cross before guiding the ball beyond Ederson.

The former Leicester and Norwich midfielder then added his second seven minutes later, playing a one-two with Son Heung-min before lifting the ball over the onrushing City goalkeeper.

It wasn't just his goalscoring that impressed, with Gary Neville hailing Maddison's ability to control the game early in the second half which helped Spurs contain City and score a third.

After the game, Maddison took to Instagram to cherish his success. Alongside a series a photos including one showing his Player of the Match award, Maddison - who boasts over two million followers - said in a caption: "A birthday to remember," alongside a white love heart emoji and a smiling face emoji.

He received plenty of praise in the comments, with Real Madrid sensation and England teammate Jude Bellingham among those to show his appreciation for Maddison. Bellingham said: "different gravy".

Dominic Solanke hailed his Spurs teammate, saying: "What a player," while Guglielmo Vicario added: "So so so happy for you brother," followed by the hands up emoji and the red love heart emoji.

Porro, Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Dane Scarlett and Kyle Walker-Peters also hailed Maddison following a brutal demolition of City, who have now lost their last five games across all competitions.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Maddison said: "It's a special day. I’ve just said in a few interviews that these days don’t come around very often, against the champions, arguably the best team in Europe, Pep Guardiola’s side, so you have to enjoy them.

"Credit to the lads, I thought we were absolutely outstanding today. We dug deep when we had to, we were clinical, we created chances, we had to rely on blocks from defenders, goalie saves… it was everything you want from a Spurs performance. That’s what we want to showcase when we’re at our best level. It was all there.

"I’m really happy, and we’ve got to enjoy the moment. I said to the boys, ‘it’s not often you’ll come to the champions and win 4-0’, so enjoy it. People always talk about the next game, but sometimes you have to sit back and reflect a little and enjoy, then move on. I’m so happy and proud of the boys."
